Ad blocker and other ad blocking extension are getting popular and popular. For users it is an blessing as it saves them from those annoying ads but in the other hand for publisher and website owner it is an worst nightmare because it highly affects website’s ad revenue.

But facebook took a step against these ad blockers and already earning it money. Today company calls its Q3 earnings and it says that company has grown by 18% in the desktop ad revenue area. As compare to last quarter facebook had only 9 percent in the same department.

Few months back ad block introduced its Ad block plus which was supposed to block out every ads thrown at it but facebook managed to keep ads flowing through Adblock Plus. Facebook says that ads help pay for operating its service, so it’s reasonable to force users to see them as long as they’re not too interruptive but at the other hand Adblock Plus and some users counter that Facebook’s ads are still distracting even if they blend into the feed.

On ad blocking, in terms of the impact I would just point out that this quarter we had 18 percent year-over-year desktop revenue growth. If you look at recent quarters, it was about half of that growth rate on a year-over-year basis. So that increment, that acceleration in desktop revenue growth is largely due to our efforts on reducing the impact of ad blocking. So that’s what led to the acceleration of desktop revenue growth – David Wehner (Facebook CFO)

Last quarter facebook made $998 million in desktop ad revenue this quarter but this quarter company managed to make $1.1 billion. Facebook makes its 84 percent of its ad revenue on mobile, desktop still contributes a meaningful amount to its total $7.01 billion in Q3 revenue.

Currently it seems that in the battle between ad blockers and facebook, engineering squad at fb are helping company to stay a step ahead.
